The state-owned Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (SJVN) in Arunachal Pradesh is developing two significant hydroelectric power (HEP) projects, and the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has authorized their Detailed Project Reports (DPRs). The two projects are expected to cost a total of about ₹40,000 crore.
Etalin HEP – Set to become India’s largest hydro project
The 3097 MW Etalin HEP that was intended for the Dri River Basin in Arunachal Pradesh has received permission. When Etalin is finished, it will have cost an estimated ₹32,813 crore, making it the largest hydroelectric project in the nation.
The massive project, which has an installed capacity of 3097 MW, would produce more than 11,000 million units of power a year. On the left and right banks of the river, Etalin HEP calls for the building of two underground power buildings and a concrete gravity dam.
The Etalin project was already approved by the environment ministry last year. Acquisition of land is presently in progress. The goal established by SJVN is to start construction by the end of 2023.
Benefits of the 680 MW Attunli HEP plant include flood moderation
The 680 MW Attunli HEP on the Attunli river basin in Arunachal Pradesh is the second project that has been sanctioned. This run-of-river scheme project is expected to cost ₹6,866 crore.
The main advantage of the Attunli project is that it will significantly reduce flooding in places downstream. With its diurnal storage, this run-of-river project will allow for flexibility in power generation during peak hours.
The project is intended to use a gross head of 534 meters to produce 2,520 million units of energy annually.
Significant improvement in infrastructure and economic growth
Arunachal Pradesh’s and the Northeast’s overall socioeconomic development will be significantly aided by the Etalin and Attunli hydro projects.
Significant infrastructure improvements, including those to roads, bridges, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and other amenities, will result from the construction of these mega HEPs.
During the building phase, thousands of jobs will be created for young people in the area. Because of the expansion of downstream economic activity, more job creation is anticipated.
The government’s goal of supplying reasonably priced and dependable electricity access throughout India will be aided by the power produced by these projects. Additionally, excess energy can be sold to nearby nations.
