(NTI) : The Calcutta High Court delivered a scathing rebuke to the West Bengal state government on Friday, condemning its utter failure to prevent mob violence at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The court characterized the incident as a glaring testament to the incompetence and ineptitude of the state machinery.
In a damning indictment, the division bench, led by Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, questioned the credibility of the state government’s assertion that police intelligence had no prior knowledge of the gathering of 7,000 people at the hospital. The court deemed this claim as highly improbable, given the gravity of the situation and the potential for violence.
To shed light on the matter and ensure accountability, the court directed both the police and hospital authorities to submit comprehensive reports detailing the sequence of events, the actions taken, and the measures in place to prevent such incidents in the future. The court set August 21 as the deadline for these reports.
In addition to the state government’s failures, the court also turned its attention to the ongoing investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a female postgraduate trainee doctor at the hospital. The court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to provide an interim update on their progress in investigating the case, underscoring the public’s demand for justice and accountability.
The incident, which had triggered a strike by junior doctors across the state, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for urgent reforms. The court’s intervention serves as a stark reminder of the importance of effective law enforcement and the protection of public institutions, particularly those providing essential healthcare services.
