Uttarakhand’s Border Areas Witness Increased Activities, Offering Breathtaking Views of Mount Kailash

(NTI): Uttarakhand, a state in India, is experiencing a surge in activities in its border regions, primarily due to the central government’s ambitious ‘Vibrant Village’ scheme. A significant discovery has emerged from this initiative: a flat plateau, approximately 200 meters high, located near the Old Lipulekh Pass, beyond Gunji in Pithoragarh. This newly found vantage point offers an unobstructed view of the revered Mount Kailash situated in Tibet.

Mount Kailash Without Crossing Borders: Uttarakhand’s Tourism Minister, Satpal Maharaj, has expressed immense pride in this achievement. He emphasized that this discovery allows Indian citizens to witness the grandeur of Mount Kailash without the need to cross into Chinese territory or obtain a passport. Maharaj recently visited the Adi Kailash region and personally explored this remarkable site. He explained that there are two primary routes from Gunji in Pithoragarh: one leading to Adi Kailash and the other to Nabhidhang. The plateau offering the view of Mount Kailash is situated beyond the Old Lipulekh road, requiring a challenging climb up a 200-meter-high cliff.

Government Plans for Improved Accessibility: While the Minister acknowledged the breathtaking view, he also highlighted the challenges associated with reaching this high-altitude location (approximately 18,000 feet). The current path is steep and perilous. To address this, the government is proposing the introduction of All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) to facilitate easier access.

Joint Development Efforts: Maharaj revealed that discussions have already been held with Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari regarding the development of this area. The Uttarakhand government has committed to improving accessibility and infrastructure. Additionally, the government has directed the construction of toilets and the blacktopping of roads connecting Gunji to Adi Kailash, Nabhidhang, and Om Parvat.

Overcoming Past Obstacles: The Minister also recounted a historical incident where Chinese soldiers had vandalized the area in the past. A KMVN (Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board) stand had been destroyed. The state government now plans to rebuild a cafeteria at the site to cater to pilgrims visiting Adi Kailash.
