(NTI, Nainital ): Varun Gupta and Iti Kaul, after a decade of building successful careers in Switzerland, made a life-altering decision to return to their Himalayan roots. This was no ordinary homecoming, but a deliberate move to leverage their international experience and infuse new energy into the picturesque town of Nainital.
Varun, a Nainital native, had always cherished the memories of his childhood spent in the shadow of the majestic mountains. Iti, originally from Srinagar, shared his deep appreciation for the serenity and beauty of the hills. Their shared love for the mountains, combined with a growing yearning for home, fueled their desire to return and contribute to their community.
The couple’s journey led them to Shyam Khet, a tranquil hamlet nestled in the Kumaon hills. Here, they embarked on an ambitious project, “Himalaica” – a mountain chalet inspired by Swiss architecture but deeply rooted in the local ethos.
“We wanted to create a space that harmonized with the natural beauty of Nainital,” Varun explains. “We used local materials and collaborated with local artisans to ensure the chalet reflected the unique character of the region.”
Himalaica quickly established itself as a haven for travelers seeking an authentic Himalayan experience. The chalet offers breathtaking views, cozy interiors, and a menu showcasing the rich flavors of Kumaoni cuisine. The staff, all hired from the local community, add a personal touch, sharing stories and insights into the region’s vibrant culture.
However, Varun and Iti’s vision extends beyond creating a successful hospitality venture. They are passionate about preserving Nainital’s old-world charm and empowering the youth in the surrounding villages.
“We believe in sustainable tourism,” says Iti. “We want to showcase the beauty of Nainital while ensuring that its unique character is preserved for future generations.”
In line with this commitment, they have launched several initiatives, including a foreign language program for young people in the Kumaon villages. This initiative not only opens up new avenues for the youth but also fosters cross-cultural understanding.
The couple’s unwavering determination and passion for their homeland have earned them the respect and admiration of the local community. They have become role models, demonstrating that one can achieve success without sacrificing one’s roots or values.
Varun and Iti’s story is a testament to the power of homecoming and the potential for positive change that lies within each individual. Their journey from the Swiss Alps to the Kumaon hills is an inspiring tale of love for one’s homeland, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment to community development. Their story is a beacon of hope, reminding us that even small steps can make a significant impact on the world around us.
