(Mohan Bhulani, NTI): A tragic road accident occurred in Almora, Uttarakhand, as a bus plunged into a gorge near Marchula, resulting in the deaths of 36 people and injuring many others. Four injured individuals were airlifted, while three were admitted to AIIMS Rishikesh. Rescue operations are ongoing at the scene, with SDRF teams actively engaged in the relief efforts.
On Monday, a bus carrying over 55 passengers fell into a river near Marchula in Almora district. Upon receiving news of the incident, police and administrative officials quickly reached the location. Almora’s SSP also arrived at the site, and an SDRF team joined the rescue operation. Officials have confirmed the loss of 36 lives in the accident.
PM Announces Compensation, Expresses Condolences
The Prime Minister’s Office has announced compensation of INR 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and INR 50,000 for the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep condolences, stating, “My sympathies are with those who lost loved ones in this tragic accident in Almora, Uttarakhand. I pray for the swift recovery of all the injured. Under the state government’s oversight, the local administration is making every possible effort in the rescue and relief work.”
The bus, traveling from Kinath to Ramnagar, fell into the river near the Sarda Bend at Marchula. Screams filled the air as the bus toppled down, with some passengers thrown out upon impact. The survivors, many of whom were severely injured, relayed the tragic news to others. Police and administrative teams promptly reached the site to assist and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
Overcrowding Possibly Contributed to the Accident
The bus, designed for 40 passengers, was reportedly carrying over 55 people at the time of the accident. Disaster Management Officer Vinay Pal from Almora confirmed the death of 36 passengers, cautioning that the toll could rise as the rescue operation progresses.
Chief Minister Orders Investigation, Suspends ARTO Enforcement
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami ordered the suspension of the respective ARTO Enforcement officers for Pauri and Almora regions. He also announced an aid of INR 4 lakh each for the families of the deceased and INR 1 lakh for the injured. Further, the Commissioner of Kumaon has been directed to conduct a magistrate-led investigation into the incident.
After speaking with officials, CM Dhami emphasized the importance of speeding up the ongoing relief and rescue operations, instructing Secretary Disaster Management, the Commissioner of Kumaon Division, and Almora’s District Magistrate to ensure that every necessary measure is taken.
