Executive Engineer of Minor Irrigation Arrested for Bribery in Haldwani

Haldwani : In a major crackdown against corruption, the Vigilance Directorate Sector (Vigilance) Haldwani Kumaon team has arrested the Executive Engineer of Minor Irrigation for taking a bribe of Rs. 50,000. The accused, Krishna Singh Kanyal, was reportedly demanding the bribe for passing bills. The arrest was made under the leadership of CO Vigilance Anil Singh Manral.

Bribery Accusations

According to Anil Singh Manral, the Vigilance team arrested Krishna Singh Kanyal, Executive Engineer of Minor Irrigation Division Nainital, on the basis of a complaint filed by the contractor. Kanyal, a resident of Lord Krishna Green, First Floor V-109, Kedarpuram Mothro Wala Dehradun, and currently residing at Mukul Vihar Sizwali Complex B-5, First Floor, Talli Bamori, Lalgarh Bypass Road Haldwani Nainital, was caught red-handed taking a bribe of Rs. 50,000 from the complainant at a resort.

Caught Red-Handed

The complainant, a contractor with the Irrigation Department, had alleged in his complaint that he had been awarded the contract for the construction of a ‘gul’ (a water channel) in Gram Selia last year. The work worth approximately Rs. 10 lakh had been completed by the complainant and the advance payment had been made in two installments. However, it was alleged that Executive Engineer Kanyal of the Minor Irrigation Department was demanding a bribe for the remaining payment. The complainant, unwilling to pay the bribe, approached the Vigilance Directorate.

Trap Laid

Upon investigation of the complaint, the allegations were found to be true and a trap team was constituted. Acting swiftly, the team apprehended Krishna Singh Kanyal, Executive Engineer of Minor Irrigation Division Nainital, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs. 50,000 from the complainant at a resort in Naya Gaon, Kaladhungi Nainital on Wednesday evening, May 22. Interrogation of the accused is underway and a probe under the Prevention of Corruption Act is being conducted in the matter.

This incident highlights the Vigilance Directorate’s commitment to combating corruption and ensuring transparency in government operations. It serves as a strong deterrent to those involved in corrupt practices and sends a clear message that such acts will not be tolerated.
