Amit Shah’s Bold Move: 5 New Districts Coming to Ladakh

(NTI) : In a significant move towards enhancing governance and fostering development in the Union Territory of Ladakh, the Union Home Ministry has announced the creation of five new districts. This decision, revealed by Home Minister Amit Shah, is seen as a major step in bringing the benefits of governance closer to the people of Ladakh.

Amit Shah emphasized that this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of building a developed and prosperous Ladakh. “The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to create five new districts in the Union Territory,” Shah stated, highlighting that these new districts—Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang—will play a crucial role in strengthening governance in every part of the region.

With the creation of these new districts, the Union Territory of Ladakh will now have a total of seven districts, up from the current two—Leh and Kargil. Each of the existing districts has its own autonomous district council, responsible for local governance. The addition of new districts is expected to further decentralize administration, making it more efficient and accessible to the people.

This development comes at a critical time, with assembly elections in neighboring Jammu and Kashmir on the horizon. Ladakh, which was part of Jammu and Kashmir until the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, was designated as a Union Territory thereafter. The creation of new districts is seen as part of the broader strategy to empower the region and ensure that the central government’s development initiatives reach every corner of Ladakh.
