(NTI): Appointed as Chairman of the Shri Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) in 2022, Ajendra Ajay has been instrumental in revitalizing the management and development of Uttarakhand’s most revered religious institutions. His tenure has been marked by a steadfast commitment to financial prudence, infrastructure enhancement, administrative reform, and the preservation of the region’s rich spiritual heritage.
Before Ajay’s appointment, BKTC faced significant financial challenges that hindered its operational efficiency and capacity for development. Through astute financial planning and the exploration of new revenue streams, he has successfully transformed the committee into a financially robust entity capable of undertaking ambitious projects. This newfound financial stability has been pivotal in addressing the infrastructure deficit that had long plagued the pilgrimage experience.
Under Ajay’s leadership, BKTC has embarked on a comprehensive restoration and beautification program for ancient temples within its jurisdiction. The long-awaited renovation of the Kotha building and expansion of the Shri Omkareshwar Temple complex in Ukhimath are prime examples of this commitment. Furthermore, the reconstruction of temples damaged in the 2013 disaster, including the Shri Ishaneshwar Temple in Kedarnath and the Bhairav Temple in Guptkashi, has been prioritized and executed with commendable speed.
One of the most visually striking achievements has been the gilding of the Kedarnath Temple’s sanctum sanctorum, a project executed by the renowned Lakhi family. This iconic transformation has elevated the spiritual aura of the temple and attracted devotees from far and wide. While the project faced opposition and controversy, Ajay’s unwavering determination ensured its successful completion.
Recognizing the need for a more efficient and transparent administration, Ajay has initiated a series of reforms within BKTC. The establishment of a dedicated financial officer position has strengthened financial oversight, while the creation of service regulations for employees has formalized HR practices and provided a clear framework for career progression. To enhance operational efficiency and accountability, he implemented personnel transfers, a decision that, while controversial, has ultimately improved the committee’s performance.
Ajay’s vision extends beyond the physical realm of temple management. Understanding the importance of security for pilgrims, he has secured government approval to establish a dedicated BKTC security force. This initiative will significantly enhance the safety and security of devotees visiting the holy shrines.
