(News Trust of India) : Kochi Metro Rail Corporation (KMRCL) has awarded the contract for Phase 2 construction to Afcons Infrastructure Ltd., marking a significant milestone in expanding Kochi’s rapid transit system. Afcons emerged as the frontrunner for the project, being the sole bidder to meet the technical qualifications. Their bid of ₹2,137 crore secured them the contract for constructing an elevated viaduct spanning 11 kilometers and ten elevated stations.

This phase of the Kochi Metro project is targeted for completion within a 2.5-year timeframe. The new line, named the Pink Line, will significantly enhance connectivity between JLN Stadium, Kakkanad, and Infopark (Smart City). The construction of the viaduct and stations will occur between Palarivattom Junction and Infopark, providing much-needed public transportation options for residents and commuters in these developing areas.

Kochi Metro’s Phase 2 project is expected to significantly improve the city’s metro network. By offering a faster, more convenient mode of travel, this expansion project is poised to play a vital role in Kochi’s continued growth and development. The improved connectivity is expected to streamline commutes, reduce traffic congestion, and boost economic activity along the Pink Line corridor.

Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. is a reputed Indian infrastructure construction company with a strong presence in the transportation sector. Their successful bid for the Kochi Metro Phase 2 project reflects their expertise in building large-scale infrastructure projects. The timely completion of this phase will be crucial for Kochi’s urban development plans, and Afcons’ experience suggests they are well-equipped to deliver on this project.

Looking ahead, the construction of Phase 2 will create job opportunities in the construction sector and provide a much-needed boost to the local economy. Once completed, the Pink Line is expected to see high ridership, further reducing reliance on private vehicles and contributing to a more sustainable urban transport system in Kochi.
